Fire Stations: The Ultimate Work & Live Design Challenge

Why do we design so many fire stations? It’s the challenge of it.  Fire stations are multi-faceted. Of course, a fire station is a garage for apparatus like ambulances, fire engines, ladder trucks, and sometimes boats and other vehicles. Oxygen tanks, turnout gear, and toolsmust be safely stored and maintained on the premises. A fire station operates as a professional workplace. Fire chiefs, lieutenants, and support staff need offices. Conference and meeting rooms. Training spaces. Sophisticated communications and emergency response systems.  Firefighters live, sleep, and eat at the station during their shifts. That means dormitories, locker rooms, and restrooms to accommodate a growing and diversifying force. Commercial kitchens and dining areas. Places tostudy, work out, and relax. A fire station is an anchor within a community. It is a safe place with trusted and trained professionals to meet the needs of the public. Many fire stations are designed to withstand hurricanes and remain open...

People + Architecture at Work in Port Everglades

We’re working with Port Everglades to design a new Public Works facility. The new facility will bring together all the divisions and trades currently spread across Port Everglades, including the people and the equipment, into a central location. This consolidation will improve management and operational efficiency and effectiveness. The initial design brings the trades together by unifying the most fundamental element: its people. Through interviews with staff, the trades are organized on a structural grid based on critical adjacencies. With a people-first approach, the design facilitates communication, connection, and community among Public Works. And the main architectural element that pulls each of the two divisions together is the Central Mall. The Central Mall serves as the spine of the building, creating ample space for employees to gather and interact, eat, and enjoy other amenities. With two large clerestories to filter light from either side, it’s a break room that abandons the “room.”...

Building Information Modeling | CPZ Process

At CPZ Architects we value Building Information Modeling (BIM) combining our architectural design with that of our consultants including structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing bringing them together into a single, holistic digital experience.  BIM is not just a 3D model rather a document database that improves project management and coordination from the planning stage through design, build, and operation and maintenance:   Improves iterative design, team collaboration, and reduces potential for error. BIM helps us more seamlessly coordinate with our consultants, contractors, and sub-contractors. It allows us to see potential conflicts before they have an impact on construction costs and timelines.  Immerses clients in the design more meaningfully before construction begins.    Not only does BIM help save our clients money through a more optimized workflow environment, using BIM softwares like Revit and rendering softwares like Lumion and Twinmotion we are able to give our clients a more comprehensive vision of their project. This allows...

West Palm Beach Fire Station #4: Enduring and sustainable community design

West Palm Beach’s Fire Station #4 is sited at the gateway of one of West Palm Beach’s historical communities. Our sensitivity to the district’s history led us to a Spanish Mission style. We engaged not only the City as our client, but also residents to ensure the station met the community’s needs.  The final design seamlessly blends into the historical neighborhood’s aesthetic, is an example of enduring architecture that can withstand a Category 5 hurricane and serve as an emergency storm shelter, sustainable design that garnered LEED Silver certification, and the recipient of an Excellence in Achievement industry award. And, of course, a new home for Station #4’s emergency responders. ...

Ocean Sports Development: We’re making waves

A new wave of architecture may be coming to Coral Springs—literally. We’re working with Ocean Sports Development to design a world class surf park. With cabanas, tiki bars, and a full-size wave park that’s Olympian-worthy, the park will cater to both surfing pros and families looking to enjoy a day in the sun.  Our design includes a Webber Wave Pool, invented by famed surfboarder Greg Webber. The Webber Wave Pool can generate 250 to 500 waves per hour and programmed and customized for any skill level or age.  The surf park links the rest of the city to the nearby Aquatic Center, further infusing the area with a sense of place and community.
